PFD questions

Zipper or no zipper? looks like the zippered ones have cool pockets and storage while the clip together versions dont have pockets. zippers seem like they are gong to break eventually.  What is your take?

My zippered PFD is going strong after 12-15 years.  It zippers up one side instead of the center, but that's just the style I liked.  I think you'll find most with the zipper PFD's are more expensive and have more pockets and attachment points.  Usually the clip ones are cheaper with less on them.  Buy what you can afford now, and then get what you really want (once you know) in the future.  Spares of any safety equipment is not bad, especially when you can't run down to the local store to pick one up quickly if lost/stolen or damaged.

yeah bob they are more expensive.  I did find some that are the same price though. I guess the zippers do hold up.  I just have bad experiences with all my zippered things breaking because of the zipper

The zippers are made better now (especially the big ones on the PFDs), but if your zipper ever gets stuck, soak it in CLR overnight, rinse it off the next day, give it a couple tugs, and it'll be good as new!

MolokaiM,

Also, good to check the back of the PFD if it clears your kayak seat.  Many of the PFD's designed for Kayaking is usually higher in back or have a thin mesh backing that doesnt get in way of your seating.  Helps keep you comfortable on those long paddles.  The pockets on my PFD has been very handy.  You might want to make sure you have someplace to put your VHF and knife.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I will look into getting the pfd with pockets and mesh backing.  How much did you guys spend on your pfd?

Marshall - Here's a thread about the Extrasport Osprey. There are a lot of guys in here who use this one. I think it's about $80.

Hey UB thanks for the tip on the stuck zipper!  My kayak seat pocket has been stuck and corroded.  Will try this!

My #1 consideration. A PFD that is comfortable to wear is a PFD you will use.

And fantastic tip on the CLR. My zippered storage compartment on my seat is hopelessly stuck. Thanks.

I use aerosol silicone spray on zippers as preventive maintenance after rinsing.

That is a great vest at a great price.

Wetokole, there are still a few cool deals for under $20!

I think the dog vest looks arfull.  ;D And the Barbie vest  seem small.  Back in the day the slang for a pdf was a "Mae West"  You'd have to be a boob not to wear one.  ;) Personally I use a Cabelas fly fishing vest set up (lots of pockets) a couple sizes too big for me.  I wear it over my standard  one pocket pdf. Like components, which ever wears out first I will replace. And you don't have to wear it when soaking it in CLR.
