Fast Find Personal Locator Beacon, $269
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:42:14 PM »
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=97363&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10107&subdeptNum=10569&classNum=11076

Visited West Marine yesterday and was checking out their display model of the Fast Find Personal Locator Beacon.  At $269, seems like a more feasible model for kayakers.  And it's small enough to stow in one of your PFD's pockets.

Wifey is a Hilo girl.  She knows how the waters can be on the far side and more than a few years ago lost a student/waterman who was diving in the same waters we fish in.  Just considering giving her more assurances.

I was also looking for a VHF for her that she could use to hail me ;)

OREYO,

It's about not carrying all your eggs in one basket.  Good to have some fault tolerance regarding safety electronics.  Despite the waterproof ratings on marine electronics, there is still a good chance they'll eventually fail.

Also, you never know what "condition" you'll be in when you need to call for help and indicate your position.  Getting readings from a GPS and/or talking into your VHF might be impossible if you're close to blacking out.  The simplicity and speed of the switch on a PLB can be a lifesaver.

Update: there are the older proven ACR models out there going for $199 or less.  Gotta thank Keverly for the find.

shaka,

At west marine for $214 now, if anyone still interested. Does anyone have this? Or opinions on this model? Was thinking of this purchase.

I purchased the acr resqlink plb. West marine website had it at $279 but when i went to the store it w $299. I found they will price match from internet retailers like amazon. Anyways they lowered the price to what was shown on their website and i got a $50 rebate. I believe the same deal is going in right now.

I like it because its about the size a clamshell cell phone. No fees with the device, you just need to register it.  Hopefully with some common sense i'll never need to use it.
