Take It Slow!
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:05:05 PM »
Condolences to their families, but this is why we PREACH about safety on this forum.  Baby steps!!!!!  Practice paddling and flipping your kayak over when you huli, make sure you have your safety equipment, get in shape, learn to paddle (even if you have Mirage Drives), AND we've said this time and time again...inexperienced people w/motors on kayaks = trouble.

Condolences to their families;

As must to understand if you can not paddle / peddle in the conditions then you may want to wait for a better day.  Safety is a must out on the water not a option.....

What happened to the missing kayaker on the Big island?

I wonder if he is even missing.  They say he wasn't due back from his adventure until Dec 12, and they don't say that he missed a check-in with anyone, so he may just still be having the time of his life.  Granted, someone may have gotten concerned about the winds of late, but the Kona coast has had the least wind of any of us, really.  While something tragic may have happened, I think it it's simply too soon to tell.  We'll see if he shows up around the 12th, I guess.

You Kona guys should keep your eyes peeled for a guy in an inflatable (!) kayak anywhere between Mahukona and Honaunau- his two destinations.

Did they die of hypthermia?  Article said they were both wearing their life jackets.

Everyone, be careful out there.  It's not like you can call a time out when things go wrong.  Aside from having all the safety equipment, make sure you're in good condition to survive should things go wrong.

Sad story, like ubs and hugh mentioned, get into better shape it will only help you.
I dont know the story maybe they tried to make a swim for it or perhaps a wave seperated them from their yaks. If you can help it do not leave your kayak, rescuers would have a better chance finding you and it is the safest possible place to be if you get into trouble. And two noobs will not be able to think this without the right information, we need to watch out for our ah noobs and continue educating everyone on safety and decisions in case of an emergency.
