Braided or mono?
« on: September 28, 2014, 12:09:30 PM »
I put about 100 yards of kastmaster 30# braided line after the 30# mono on my penn 950. I have used it for a few trips, Last trip, got some decent 6+ rainbow runners with it.The set up felt kind of border line, then The line broke. The fish may have been 8#s.I feel maybe the braided line breaks down faster than the mono, granted I wasn't using power pro, which is more spendy. Curious what other people feel about this.

I use PP or Suffix braid and I don't find it degrading any faster than my mono.  I normally strip off a few yards of the braid if I notice damage to the line.
Just curious why you didn't run a heavier braid spliced to your mono?  On my whipping stuff I use 40# PP spliced to 80# mono.

So you have mono backing spliced to braid?  I run the opposite and I only have about 15' of mono topshot.
HOW much is that to ship to Hawaii!!!???

I see what your saying, I just happen to have 30# braided I put on some smaller reels, maybe I will try the more spendy brands. Is that 15' of 80# mono flourocabon? I have been using my regular mono for leader, maybe I shouldn't scrimp there either. I found trying to save pennies with fishing was counter productive, I was trying to use hagi for bait, then I finally put down for a brick of frozen bait fish, it's a whole different story.

Its 80# berkely mono, my smaller set up I use 60# seaguar fluro premier, I don't notice any real difference in the bite, I get hits on both.

I am not using braided at all, I am experimenting with 4-8# for opelu, 8-10# for kawakawa, 50# for my 1050 and 80# for my 6/0 and 9/0. That seems to be working all right.
