Makahiki 2015
« on: November 17, 2014, 10:12:39 AM »
I am starting the thread early this for next season got a lot of work ahead of me. Gonna list a few things I will be looking into and would love to have your input/feedback for a successful 2015. I will list some of the things I will address for next year.

- reporting all catches/whitewashes within 48 hours
- picture/video technique for fish on a scoring cusp
- scoring change for pelagic fish between 5 and 11 pounds
- scorkeeping

If you have a concern/suggestion please list it here or message me.

If your fish is within 1 pound on either side of a weight class change (10 pounds, 20 lbs, etc.) then you may have to photograph or video your fish on a scale.  There is a chance that the stakes will be growing quite a bit, and this will help eliminate any question.  I'm all for it, and I'm a guy who had plenty of 'barely ten-pounders' this year.

48 hours to report catches
This season you will have to report your catches within 48 hours of your claim. If you cannot do so either report to one of the designated members or your catch will be disqualified. Also you will still be responsible for posting up the picture and scoring soon after. I will be taking volunteers for the mass text please.

Fish pictures
For all fish caught and killed to be claimed, we will need a picture including yourself (face). I need this for all our Makahiki pictures and its good practice for continually satisfying our sponsors. You can all thank me later.

Beach claims
Beach claims now need to be reported to a third person that is not your partner on the water for the day.
I will be setting up a mass text that 5 or 6 of us will be able to receive at any time. If you beach claim but not to the text your catch will not count.
If you are unable to text (1),  you may call and leave a message with me (2), or you may post on social media (3).

Weighing and documenting 10 pound fish
For fish right on that 10 pound limit we will be doing things a bit different, you must understand that ALL scoring UKU and PELAGIC fish around 10 will be under close scrutiny. To avoid anyone getting offended, YOU WILL NEED TO take a quick video of your fish on the scale from head to toe including weight. I know it sounds like a headache but it will keep us from doubting and accusing anyone of dishonesty. Remember its only for 10 pound fish example: 10.1, 10.2, 10.3...ect.

I like and support these changes- a couple of them are long overdue.  If anyone is worried that they aren't techno-savvy enough to handle, I'm sure there are guys who will be happy to help you out, myself included.

Good changes. I also think the points for pelagic fish in the 5 - 9.99lb range should change. The fact that you could catch n release a 2 oz uku or goat and almost get as much points as a 9.99lb pelagic was bothersome. All in all though, I like these changes.

Maybe i misunderstood. I thought there was talk back lowering the weight requirement for some of the commonly smaller pelagic.
It made sense to me. It takes just as much skill to catch a 7 pound Kamanu as a 10 pound one and Kamanu over 10 seem to be rare.
Maybe not so much for kawakawa.

If its not broke don't fix it  ;)

Looks good to me!  I can take messages for beach claim days.  I keep a separate phone for ridicules work activity (less desirable coworkers / unhappy parents... etc) and most importantly the beach.

I'm down with the new changes.  On the subject of mass text, can we chose who it goes out to?  Hopfully next year we'll have some good weather to smash some fish......

The new changes look great! I think putting a 48 hr time limit on reporting will help for the better. I can help on the Kauai front too if you need me too ;D
