Karl's Makahiki 2015 #1
« on: February 03, 2015, 10:59:46 AM »
Hi, Karl here.  This' my first time participating a kayak tourney.  Thought this tourney looked cool and it would be fun to join.

My kayak's a Hobie Outfitter.

I've been diving & fishing off a kayak for long time.  Not sure if I qualify to participate cuz just last night I found out that in the rule sheet, a VHF radio is required.  The thing is that I'm deaf so the radio doesn't do good for me.  So, will see what's up.

I've seen awesome catches already.

Till later,
Karl

You still need a VHF radio like the rest of the entrants.
Also would you kindly follow format for listing your full name, island, and kayak? Thank you.

Howzit Karl...
Because of your condition, are you able to communicate verbally?  How about an EPIRB or a ACR personal locating device?  Once you register these devises they will know everything they need to know about you in case of an emergency.

Got this delorme inreach explorer vhf device.

It's supposed to have 100% global coverage along with SOS button.

The rugged and waterproof inReach provides the ability to exchange full-size, 160- character text messages, back and forth with loved ones at home and with the search and rescue monitoring staff.

Thanks for watching out.  I'll pretty much avoid another kayaker who's trolling if I ever happen to see one on Sunday.

Never seen those things before but looks pretty bad a$$.  Pretty expensive though and with the added monthly fees- ouch!  If you already have a smart phone and have a waterproof case for it then you could essentially do the same thing the Delorme does.  The ACR could save you some big $$$ and provide the same pinpoint emergency response without additional fees.

I believe 619-SWIM-DOG is a Coastguard member... given your condition, maybe he can chime in and give you the best approach for safety.  Either route you take you will be covered- just trying to save you some cash in the long run.

Good luck tomorrow... Hanapa'a!!!

I recently activated my EPIRB by mistake.  The coast guard called my home here on the Big Island within two minutes.

Yeah... I'm not messing around with SOS button on the VHF device.  Yeah the monthly fees  :o - I just opted for safety use so its affordable.  I hunt in places where there's no cell reception so it may come in handy.

Day 1 - I saw couple of guys in the same spot I was launching from - I think they are participants as well.  My friend said one of them got a mahi.

Wasn't my day, man - got several strikes and lost fish on a kayak.  Was bummed out since got nothing to show for it... so decided to go into shallow and caught smalls.

I'll work on scores later on; caught n released hage, moana, & papio. Brought in tapee and uku which I gave to my friend.
-------------------------------------------------------------
I'm newbie and looking at how the scores/reporting are done in previous tourney and the rules for this tourney.  Would appreciate any comments if I'm doing it wrong and I'll correct em... here are two fishes to report since I missed out the MM straight:

hage 5 + cnr +2 = 7
Moano 6 + cnr +2 = 8

Day 1 15 points

Day 2 - fish win... - spit out and no hook ups with mutilated baits.  Apparently according to my friend, my trolling rig is too small for pelagic.  time to read up da "Rigging" forum.  Still trying for my first mahi or wahio.

aawa cnr - 7
hage cnr - 7
aha - 10
weke ula cnr - 8
nunu cnr - 2

day 2: 34
total: 49

Can only claim your two highest scoring fish for the day, unless you get fish that qualify for one of the special categories  (triple offshore, full house, three of a kind, etc).

Caught my first mahi!  Third time's a charm, I suppose.

mahi - 20
uku - 25

Also, caught a papio on a campania lure, but my friend caught a bigger one.

Day 3 total: 45

Overall: 94
