DriftingSon Makahiki 2015
« on: February 08, 2015, 07:48:48 PM »
Name:  Shawn Zenor
Island:  Big Island
Makahiki seasons:  5
Kayak(s):  Jackson Kraken, Jackson Cuda 14, Jackson Big Tuna.

Here we go!  I'm a little late to the party, and hopefully haven't blown all my luck on my second sailfish this past week, but I'm looking forward to giving it my all in what looks to be the best season ever for prizes.  Big mahalo to Isaac for putting in the hard work to make it all happen.  I'm stoked to be competing with some of the best offshore kayak fisherman in the world once again.

Looks like the sailfish school wised up and booked it outta there, along with most of the other fish.  Odd variable winds today and deceptively strong current that was enough to wear you down, but not enough to switch the spots on for the fish.  Finally had two strikes late in the day and got one to stick on a small mahi.

Aha: 10 pts
Mahi, 14#:  20 pts

Day 1 total:  30 pts

Shoooots.  I though I had picked the right spot thinking that the currents were going to be just right, but guess what?  Exact opposite!

Far from glassy, but workable.  Currents have been backwards lately so finding fish holding at the usual spots isn't happening at this launch.  Except Kawaleas.  I know where they're holding.  Only got one livey before lunch and then he got smacked by an aha.  Jigged up a couple kawaleas for base points, then ate a sandwich and paddled around until I found where the opelu were hiding, and then quickly loaded up.  Debris everywhere today, coming in from far offshore- buoys, logs, styrofoam chunks- all loaded with barnacles and tiny fish, but nothing bigger.  Finally saw a big mahi swim by as I was catching bait and headed straight for my short line.  Then my long line goes and a leaping mahi is on.  As soon as I get him up into the boat, the short line goes, and a leaping mahi is on- and then off again.  Didn't get the drag tightened down on the spinner before she leaped.  Has a close encounter with a curious whale, picked up a bunch of trash out of the water, and called it a day.

Did another text claim today after dropping off my kids and checking out a new launch.  Decided to go for it through the surf, and spent a nice long day battling wind, current, and just to make things interesting, some hard rain late in the day.  Caught lots of bait- unfortunately, I brought it all home with me.  Still dead out there.

We had been hoping for a calm Saturday all week, but the forecast changed suddenly the night before, and ended up having to deal with the typical 15-20 knots all day.  So we battled, and the fight were good, with some won and some lost.  Watched my partner fight a sailfish for a while, but unfortunately that was one of the battles lost.  Action was hot in the morning and I got two dozer onos loaded into the Kraken, but there was so much weight in the bow that my rudder was half out of the water so I had to go in for a lunchtime unload.  Came back out to find that the action had cooled down, but missed another good ono and luckily stumbled on a nice shibi.  Steady paddling into the wind all day has me feeling pretty sore today!

Forecast calling for 20-30 knots tomorrow.  A skirmish, battle, war, jihad- us against the fish with the wind on their side, but to the victor go the spoils.  Claiming tomorrow, 3-15-14.
